For Cat Lovers

My very first pet as an adult (on my own) was an adopted barn cat from Norfolk, England. Her name was Ally. Named after Ally Sheedy. That was back in 1985 when I lived in the UK. Since then, I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for felines.

Connecting with kitty cats in Bali is a bit of a challenge. Cats aren’t as common as dogs on the island. Basically, the dogs rule the streets in Bali.

But, when we are in Surabaya visiting family, I get my cat fix. On the island of Java, cats rule the streets. Street dogs in Java are rare–the opposite of Bali.

On the Road in East Java

Feature photo from the archives. On the road in East Java.

Cultural Diversity

A short ferry boat ride across the Bali Strait from the port town of Gilimanuk, Bali lies the seaside town of Banyuwangi. Banyuwangi is located on the eastern tip of Java. It’s here where island of 1,000 temples gives way to a land graced by mosque architecture. And, the gamelan turns into melodic calls to prayer over the loudspeakers.

This crossing is a vivid reminder of how culturally diverse Indonesia is.

There will be no Pasar Ubud photo tours from 4 June to 10 June to honour Idul Fitri. Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri.

Blurry on Purpose (Balinese Muscle)

A couple weeks ago, I found myself in the middle of a body building contest in a shopping mall in Kuta, Bali. Does the word surreal come to mind yet?

So, what does a passionate street photographer do in this kind of situation?

  1. Pack up the camera and pull out the Visa card to do some shopping?
  2. Say, “Forget this!”, and does a 180 to get back out on the street?
  3. Or, puts the viewfinder to the eye and starts clicking?

If your answer was #3, you and I need to go hang out together.

Enjoy this new addition to the Abstractionism section of the Artistic Street photo gallery.

Here are a couple outtakes just so you kinda get the vibe of the scene.

Surabaya – Bali Street Photographer on the Road Series

New Series

I always enjoy launching a new photo series. My goal for this new series is to share street photography of places outside of Ubud, Bali. A sort of Bali Street Photographer (BSP) on the road if you will.

Surabaya

The hero image for this post was taken last week (end of February 2019) at an open market at Car-Free Day in Surabaya. Car-Free Day is when the city of Surabaya shuts down one of the most scenic & busiest downtown streets called Jalan Raya Dharmo. This event is held every Sunday.

Surabaya is Indonesia’s “second city” and is located in East Java. Java is Bali’s next door neighbor to the west.

Technique

In this hero photo, I worked the crowd by blending in, going with the flow, and playing with layers of people & objects. Read more about layered photo compositions here.

Stay tuned for a dedicated gallery for BSP on the Road.

Bali Dog Gone Fishing

While on assignment on Nusa Lembongan, a small island off the coast of South Bali, we spotted this beautiful Bali dog foragging for food in the ocean. We’ve rescued and adopted many dogs over the years. Yet, I’ve never seen a dog actually “fishing” before. And, the traditional jukung (outrigger boat) presented a picturesque backdrop while giving the photo context.

Thinking of Lombok – August 2018 Earthquakes

As I read the news, it’s unfathomable for me to comprehend what the people and visitors of Lombok are going through right now. I’ve read reports of villagers and tourists escaping collapsing buildings only to frantically run in darkness for higher ground in fear of a tsunami. It’s terrifying for me just to read these stories.

If you haven’t heard about what’s going on in Lombok and neighboring Bali, here’s a quick read from The Economist 9 August 2018 to get you caught up.

ON AUGUST 6th the Indonesian island of Lombok was shaken for the second time in ten days. A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the tourist haven, razing buildings, shattering roads and cutting off electricity. A government-issued tsunami warning added to the panic, sending people running for higher ground, though the ensuing wave proved small. Thousands of people have been evacuated. Crowds gathered on the beaches of the Gili Islands, off Lombok’s north-west coast, to be shipped to safety. The quake killed 347 people and injured over 1,000. A smaller tremor which hit days before claimed 17 lives. Another struck on August 9th.

As for Bali, sadly we had a couple of fatalities and structural damage from 6 August. We’ve felt the aftershocks–especially the one yesterday on 9 August. And now, life goes on. But, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone negatively affected by the August 6 quake and dozens of aftershocks. My heart goes out especially to the people of Lombok who lost loved ones. And, for those who don’t have a home anymore–who have lost everything.

Surf’s up in Sanur Bali

surf’s up in sanur bali

Today, the waves were big enough to cancel all ferry boats going from Sanur, Bali to Nusa Lembongan (island off the coast of Bali). So, what does a street photographer at the beach do? Click some street photographs of course ;-).

Can photos at the beach be really considered street photography? Read more here–What is Street Photography?

Photo above made in Sanur, Bali on 19 July 2018 when all ferries were canceled due to high surf.
